Space-A travel is one of the greatest benefits available to military families — but it requires preparation, patience, and the right information. This interactive planner walks you through every stage of the process, from checking your eligibility to having a backup plan.

Determine Your Eligibility
Know your Space-A category before you plan
Space-A Categories I–VI
Category I: Emergency leave. Category II: Environmental Morale Leave (EML). Category III: Active duty on ordinary leave. Category IV: Unaccompanied dependents on EML. Category V: Active duty on permissive TDY. Category VI: Retired military and dependents.
Important Limitations
100% DAV (disabled veterans) have limited Space-A eligibility — only on CONUS flights when specifically authorized. Guard and Reserve members must have valid active-duty orders or be in an appropriate status. Unaccompanied dependents require command sponsorship documentation.
Active Duty Requirements
Active duty must be on approved leave or pass status and carry valid leave paperwork. Patriot Express flights may charge a small fee per person.

Why Each Document Matters
Military ID verifies your identity and category. Leave paperwork confirms you are on approved leave — without it you may be turned away. Passports are required for all international destinations. DD Form 1853 is the verification form specifically for Guard and Reserve eligibility.

Not all terminals serve all destinations
Schedules Are Forecasts Only
Published flight schedules are forecasts — not guarantees. Flights may be added, delayed, or canceled at any time. Always have a backup plan and confirm with the terminal directly before traveling.

Sign Up for Space-A
Earlier sign-up = higher priority within your category
How Priority Works
Within each passenger category, selection is determined by your sign-up date and time — not by rank or branch. Signing up earlier gives you an advantage over others in the same category. Sign-ups are valid for 60 days or until your leave expires (whichever comes first).

Monitor Flight Schedules
Stay informed — flights change frequently
Critical Warning
Flights may cancel at any time without notice. The 72-hour schedule is a planning tool — not a confirmed itinerary. Never book non-refundable lodging or commercial connections based solely on an expected Space-A flight.

Pack for the Flight
Cargo aircraft are not commercial airliners
Cargo Aircraft Reality
Cargo planes are noisy, cold, and lack typical flight amenities. Seating may be along the sides with webbed seats. There are no flight attendants or meal service. Come prepared for a unique — but memorable — experience.

Roll Call — Be Ready
This is the moment that counts
Missed Roll Call = Missed Flight
Roll calls typically happen 2–3 hours before departure. Names are called by category, then by sign-up date/time. If you miss your name — even by a few seconds — you may lose your seat. Stay in the terminal, stay alert, and keep your documents ready.

Avoid The #1 Mistake
The most common Space-A mistake is assuming you are guaranteed a return flight. Always budget for commercial alternatives — both for getting there AND getting home. Space-A is an incredible benefit, but it requires flexibility, patience, and a financial safety net.
