What Is Space-A Travel?

Space-Available (Space-A) travel is one of the most valuable and underused benefits available to military service members, retirees, and their families. It allows eligible passengers to fill unused seats on Department of Defense (DoD) aircraft — at little to no cost.

If you’ve ever dreamed of flying across the Pacific for free, or hopping to Europe with just a duffel bag and a flexible schedule, Space-A travel might be your ticket.

Who Is Eligible?

Eligibility depends on your passenger category (CAT I through CAT VI):

  • CAT I — Service members on emergency leave
  • CAT II — Active duty on ordinary leave with environmental and morale leave (EML) orders
  • CAT III — Active duty on ordinary leave (no EML)
  • CAT IV — Unaccompanied family members on EML
  • CAT V — Unaccompanied command-sponsored dependents
  • CAT VI — Retirees and reservists

Active duty service members on leave (CAT III) are the most common Space-A travelers.

How to Get Started

  1. Register at your local Air Mobility Command (AMC) terminal — Most bases with an AMC passenger terminal offer in-person and remote sign-up.
  2. Check flight schedules — Use the AMC website or apps like “Take A Hop” to see upcoming mission schedules.
  3. Pack light and flexible — Space-A is not guaranteed. Bring patience, snacks, and extra clothes.

Pro tip: Always have a backup plan. Commercial flights, nearby bases, and remote terminals increase your odds of catching a flight.

Best Bases for Space-A Travel

  • Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) — Frequent flights to Alaska, Hawaii, and Asia-Pacific
  • Naval Station Norfolk — East Coast hub with flights to Europe
  • Travis AFB — Major West Coast gateway to the Pacific

This guide was last updated June 2024. Flight schedules and policies change frequently — always verify with your local AMC terminal.
